What this worksheet covers
There are 30 fractions problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and the numbers run as high as 16. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "Simplify 2/8." and "Write 16/6 as a mixed number.". The sheet sits inside Common Core 5.NF.1, in the grade 5 Number & Operations—Fractions strand.
Skills practised
At grade 5, fractions is about adding and subtracting unlike denominators, multiplying fractions, and dividing with unit fractions, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is adding fractions with unlike denominators, subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, and multiplying fractions. Working the page asks a student to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms. 27 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the mixed review format
Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover six different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "Simplify 2/8." sits next to problems of a different kind. Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "6 ÷ 1/6", Set B's is "Simplify 8/12.".
How to use this worksheet
Give this mixed review uninterrupted. At grade 5, fractions is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 30 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Keep the key face down until all 30 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
Numerators and denominators are added separately: 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5. Problem 21 on this grade 5 mixed review page, "Write 16/6 as a mixed number.", is where to look for it.
The fraction is read as two whole numbers stacked, not as a count of a unit.
Use fraction strips and ask what a "fifth" would even be here; halves and thirds are different units and must be renamed before combining.
