What this worksheet covers

This is a 72-problem timed drill for grade 5 mixed operations, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The numbers run as high as 132. Problems 25 and 49, for instance, are "84 ÷ 12" and "3 × 10". It is written against Common Core 3.OA.7 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 3.

Skills practised

Grade 5 mixed operations means order of operations with parentheses and multi-digit computation. What a student is asked to do here is mixed multiplication and division facts. To finish it, a student has to recall the mixed operations facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. 38 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "84 ÷ 12" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Mixed facts under time pressure are the truest fluency check there is: nothing can be done by pattern.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "2 × 12", Set B's is "4 × 3".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 72 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 5 student to find their own mixed operations error teaches more than seeing it circled. Keep the key face down until all 72 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
