What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 5 mixed review sheet holds 30 percents problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Two problems from the middle of the page — "Write 0.75 as a percent." and "80% = ___/100" — show the range. Common Core 6.RP.3 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

The grade 5 percents sequence covers percents as fractions and decimals, and benchmark percents of a number; this page sits inside it. The skills on the page: percents, fractions and decimals, benchmark percents of a number, and percents as hundredths. Working the page asks a student to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, keep the decimal points aligned, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 26 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

The 30 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 11, "Write 0.75 as a percent." is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Conversions, percent-of and reverse problems on one page keep the student reading the question, not the pattern.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "80% of 80", Set B's is "Write 70% as a decimal.".

How to use this worksheet

Give this mixed review uninterrupted. At grade 5, percents is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 30 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Date the mixed review before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the percents stuck.

One mistake to watch for

Finding the whole from a part is done by multiplying: "30% of a number is 12" is answered 3.6. Problem 21 on this grade 5 mixed review page, "80% = ___/100", is where to look for it.

The forward procedure is being run on a reverse question.

Set it up as 30% × ___ = 12 and read it as a missing-factor problem.
