What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 3 missing number sheet holds 24 mixed operations problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 172. Two problems from the middle of the page — "___ - 11 = 48" and "18 + ___ = 117" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 3.OA.7 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 3.

Skills practised

The grade 3 mixed operations sequence covers all four operations, with two-step expressions introduced; this page sits inside it. The skill on the page: all four operations. Working the page asks a student to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 22 different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "___ - 11 = 48" is one of them. A blank on a mixed page can belong to any operation, so the student has to reason about the relationship rather than recall a fact.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "___ ÷ 6 = 2", Set B's is "___ ÷ 7 = 6".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 24 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own mixed operations error teaches more than seeing it circled. Keep the key face down until all 24 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

The operation sign is ignored: every problem on a mixed page is added. On this grade 3 missing number, problem 17 ("18 + ___ = 117") is the kind of item where it shows.

Sign reading is not yet part of the routine because most practice pages only carry one operation.

Have the student circle or trace every operation sign before solving anything on the page.
