What this worksheet covers

Eighteen mixed operations problems fill this drill page; problem 7 asks "12 × 5 + 39", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 136. Further down, problem 13 asks "5 × 6 + 16". It is written against Common Core 4.OA.3 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 4.

To finish it, a student has to recall the mixed operations facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Seventeen different answers appear across the eighteen problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 18 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 7, "12 × 5 + 39" shows the level it holds. A drill that changes operation from problem to problem tests sign reading as much as computation.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 10 is "5 × 10 + 67", Set B's is "3 × 10 + 38".

How to use this worksheet

By grade 4 a student should take all eighteen mixed operations problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more mixed operations practice piles on. Mark the eighteen problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

The operation sign is ignored: every problem on a mixed page is added. Watch problem 13 of this drill — "5 × 6 + 16" — for this one.

Sign reading is not yet part of the routine because most practice pages only carry one operation.

Have the student circle or trace every operation sign before solving anything on the page.
