What this worksheet covers

There are 22 measurement problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 8 and 15, for instance, are "Liam drinks 0.25 liters of juice at breakfast every day.…" and "A hiking trail is 12.8 kilometers long. A group has already…". It is written against Common Core 4.MD.2 — Measurement & Data, grade 4.

Skills practised

The grade 4 measurement sequence covers converting within the customary and metric systems, feet and inches together, and area and perimeter; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is measurement Word Problems: Four Operations. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and carry money notation through to the answer.

About the mixed review format

How to use this worksheet

Give this mixed review uninterrupted. At grade 4, measurement is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 22 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Ask the student to re-work one missed measurement problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.

One mistake to watch for

A conversion multiplies when it should divide: 36 inches becomes 432 feet. Watch problem 15 of this mixed review — "A hiking trail is 12.8 kilometers long. A group has already…" — for this one.

The direction of the conversion is not being reasoned about.

Ask "should the answer be a bigger number or a smaller one?" before touching the factor; feet are bigger units so there are fewer of them.
