What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 4 drill sheet holds 30 measurement problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 119. Two problems from the middle of the page — "8 kg = ___ g" and "6 days = ___ hr" — show the range. Common Core 4.MD.1 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 4 measurement means converting within the customary and metric systems, feet and inches together, and area and perimeter. What a student is asked to do here is converting within a measurement system and feet and inches. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 28 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "8 kg = ___ g" shows the level it holds. A page of one conversion or one formula is where the factor or the formula becomes automatic.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "9 ft 11 in = ___ in", Set B's is "29 in = ___ ft ___ in".
How to use this worksheet
Give this drill uninterrupted. At grade 4, measurement is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 30 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Ask the student to re-work one missed measurement problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Perimeter and area are confused, or both are given in the same unit. On this grade 4 drill, problem 21 ("6 days = ___ hr") is the kind of item where it shows.
The two ideas — distance around and space inside — have not been separated physically.
Trace the perimeter with a finger and shade the area for a few shapes; then insist on "units" versus "square units" in every answer.
