What this worksheet covers
There are 24 measurement problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 400. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ gal = 28 qt" and "___ lb = 32 oz". Common Core 4.MD.1 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 4 measurement means converting within the customary and metric systems, feet and inches together, and area and perimeter. The skills on the page: converting within a measurement system and missing side lengths. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Eighteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ gal = 28 qt" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A missing side, dimension or unit count reverses the formula, which is the only way to check it is understood.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "___ pt = 22 cups", Set B's is "12 lb = ___ oz".
How to use this worksheet
Work the 24 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own measurement error teaches more than seeing it circled. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in measurement rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Perimeter and area are confused, or both are given in the same unit. Watch problem 17 of this missing number — "___ lb = 32 oz" — for this one.
The two ideas — distance around and space inside — have not been separated physically.
Trace the perimeter with a finger and shade the area for a few shapes; then insist on "units" versus "square units" in every answer.
