What this worksheet covers

This is a 30-problem mixed review for grade 4 subtraction, printed in black and white with the key on page two. 21 of the 30 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 84,622. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "700 - 129" and "9529 - 1692". Common Core 4.NBT.4 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

The grade 4 subtraction sequence covers the standard algorithm on four- and five-digit numbers; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise four-digit subtraction with the standard algorithm, five-digit subtraction, and subtracting across zeros. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit. 27 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover four different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "700 - 129" sits next to problems of a different kind. Mixing regrouping and non-regrouping problems stops a student from borrowing on every problem out of habit.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "53010 - 20762", Set B's is "21821 - 12103".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 30 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own subtraction error teaches more than seeing it circled. If more than a third of the 30 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in subtraction rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Regrouped digits are written but the original digit is not crossed out, so it gets used twice. Problem 21 on this grade 4 mixed review page, "9529 - 1692", is where to look for it.

The notation is being performed without the meaning attached to it.

Insist on the cross-out as part of the trade, and check work by adding the answer back to the subtrahend.
