What this worksheet covers
24 measurement problems fill this missing number page; problem 9 asks "A rectangle has area 8 sq cm and width 4 cm. Length = ___ cm", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 300. Further down, problem 17 asks "A rectangle has perimeter 12 cm and length 2 cm. Width =…". Common Core 3.MD.8 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
At grade 3, measurement is about perimeter and area of rectangles, elapsed time in minutes, and grams and milliliters, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise missing side lengths and hours and minutes. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Nine different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "A rectangle has area 8 sq cm and width 4 cm. Length = ___ cm" is one of them. A missing side, dimension or unit count reverses the formula, which is the only way to check it is understood.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "A rectangle has perimeter 28 m and length 11 m. Width = ___…", Set B's is "A rectangle has area 14 sq m and width 1 m. Length = ___ m".
How to use this worksheet
Give this missing number uninterrupted. At grade 3, measurement is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 24 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Ask the student to re-work one missed measurement problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Perimeter and area are confused, or both are given in the same unit. Watch problem 17 of this missing number — "A rectangle has perimeter 12 cm and length 2 cm. Width =…" — for this one.
The two ideas — distance around and space inside — have not been separated physically.
Trace the perimeter with a finger and shade the area for a few shapes; then insist on "units" versus "square units" in every answer.
