What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 5 missing number sheet holds 24 measurement problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 660. Two problems from the middle of the page — "10 L = ___ mL" and "7 weeks = ___ days" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 5.MD.1 — Measurement & Data, grade 5.

Skills practised

The grade 5 measurement sequence covers conversions with decimals, volume of rectangular prisms, and missing dimensions; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise conversions with decimals and missing dimensions. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Fifteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "10 L = ___ mL" is one of them. A missing side, dimension or unit count reverses the formula, which is the only way to check it is understood.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "8 km = ___ m", Set B's is "7 lb = ___ oz".

How to use this worksheet

Give this missing number uninterrupted. At grade 5, measurement is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 24 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in measurement rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Perimeter and area are confused, or both are given in the same unit. Watch problem 17 of this missing number — "7 weeks = ___ days" — for this one.

The two ideas — distance around and space inside — have not been separated physically.

Trace the perimeter with a finger and shade the area for a few shapes; then insist on "units" versus "square units" in every answer.

A step either side

The same format one grade down and one grade up — the easier sheet is often the faster fix when this one is not landing.
