What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 6 mixed review sheet holds 30 integers problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: 21 of the 30 problems involve a negative quantity and the numbers run as high as 94. Two problems from the middle of the page — "1 + 6" and "10 + (-8)" — show the range. The sheet sits inside Common Core 6.NS.7, in the grade 6 The Number System strand.

Skills practised

Grade 6 integers means comparing and ordering integers, opposites, absolute value, and a first look at adding on a number line. What a student is asked to do here is comparing integers, absolute value, and opposites. Working the page asks a student to track direction as well as magnitude and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 25 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

The 30 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 11, "1 + 6" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Mixing the four operations on signed numbers forces the student to pick the right sign rule for each problem.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "-10 + (-7)", Set B's is "|20|".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an integers answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. If more than a third of the 30 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in integers rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Adding a negative is treated as an error: -8 + 3 is answered 11 or -11. Problem 21 on this grade 6 mixed review page, "10 + (-8)", is where to look for it.

The rule "addition makes things bigger" held for seven years and is being defended.

Work on a number line only, with no rules, until direction is automatic; introduce the sign shortcuts afterward.
