What this worksheet covers
There are 60 integers problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. 33 of the 60 problems involve a negative quantity and the numbers run as high as 97. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "The opposite of 55 is" and "|82|". The sheet sits inside Common Core 6.NS.7, in the grade 6 The Number System strand.
Skills practised
At grade 6, integers is about comparing and ordering integers, opposites, absolute value, and a first look at adding on a number line, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can track direction as well as magnitude and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 39 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "The opposite of 55 is" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Signed facts under time pressure show whether the rules are known or being re-derived each time.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "17 ___ -40", Set B's is "-30 ___ 44".
How to use this worksheet
Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 60 problems. At grade 6, integers rewards care over speed — a rushed timed drill gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Print Set B of this integers timed drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
