What this worksheet covers

There are 24 integers problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, eighteen of the 24 problems involve a negative quantity and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ - (-8) = 13" and "-17 + ___ = 0". Common Core 7.NS.1 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 7 integers means adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers, and order of operations with signed numbers. The skills on the page: adding integers, subtracting integers, and multiplying integers. To finish it, a student has to track direction as well as magnitude and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Eighteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ - (-8) = 13" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A missing addend or factor with a sign is the sharpest test of whether the rules are understood rather than pattern-matched.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "-3 × ___ = -87", Set B's is "-23 + ___ = -45".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 24 problems. At grade 7, integers rewards care over speed — a rushed missing number gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Date the missing number before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the integers stuck.

One mistake to watch for

The sign rule for multiplication is applied to addition: -3 + (-4) is answered 7. Problem 17 on this grade 7 missing number page, "-17 + ___ = 0", is where to look for it.

One rule — "two negatives make a positive" — is being used for every operation.

Separate the two rules explicitly: adding moves along the line, multiplying flips or keeps direction.
