What this worksheet covers

30 fractions problems fill this mixed review page; problem 11 asks "5/8 + 1/2", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and operands run to three decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Further down, problem 21 asks "1/2 - 2/4". The sheet sits inside Common Core 6.NS.1, in the grade 6 The Number System strand.

Skills practised

The grade 6 fractions sequence covers dividing fractions by fractions and all four operations with mixed numbers; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise dividing fractions by fractions, operations with mixed numbers, and multiplying fractions. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms and keep the decimal points aligned. 25 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

The 30 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 11, "5/8 + 1/2" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Comparison, equivalence and computation on one page stops the sheet from being a single procedure repeated.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "4/5 + 1/3", Set B's is "2 2/3 + 2 5/6".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 30 problems. At grade 6, fractions rewards care over speed — a rushed mixed review gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. If more than a third of the 30 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in fractions rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Division of fractions inverts the wrong fraction, or both. On this grade 6 mixed review, problem 21 ("1/2 - 2/4") is the kind of item where it shows.

"Invert and multiply" is remembered as a rule without the reasoning that only the divisor flips.

Say "how many groups of the second fraction fit in the first" for a few problems, so the divisor is the one that changes.
