What this worksheet covers

This is a 30-problem mixed review for grade 7 fractions, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Six of the 30 problems involve a negative quantity and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "1/3 ÷ 1/5" and "1/2 ÷ 2/5". The sheet sits inside Common Core 7.RP.1, in the grade 7 Ratios & Proportional Relationships strand.

Skills practised

The grade 7 fractions sequence covers complex fractions, signed fractions, and fractions as terminating and repeating decimals; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is complex fractions, adding and subtracting negative fractions, and operations with mixed numbers. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, keep the decimal points aligned, and track direction as well as magnitude. 28 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover five different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "1/3 ÷ 1/5" sits next to problems of a different kind. Comparison, equivalence and computation on one page stops the sheet from being a single procedure repeated.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "3/4 ÷ 3/4", Set B's is "1/6 + (-2/3)".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 7 an fractions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Keep the key face down until all 30 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

Equivalent fractions are made by adding the same number to top and bottom: 2/3 becomes 3/4. Watch problem 21 of this mixed review — "1/2 ÷ 2/5" — for this one.

Multiplying and adding are being confused in the renaming step.

Draw the fraction, cut every piece in half, and count; the pieces double, they do not gain one.
