What this worksheet covers
This is a 10-problem word problems for grade 5 decimals, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "7 friends split a bill of $53.48 equally. How much does…" and "A board is 49.54 meters long. Quinn cuts off 44.59 meters.…".
Skills practised
At grade 5, decimals is about adding and subtracting decimals to hundredths, and multiplying and dividing by whole numbers, and this sheet takes one slice of that. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and carry money notation through to the answer.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "7 friends split a bill of $53.48 equally. How much does…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Money and measurement are where decimals live outside the classroom, and where a misplaced point is obviously wrong.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "Sam walked 15.35 km in the morning and 5.02 km in the…", Set B's is "3 friends split a bill of $57.00 equally. How much does…".
How to use this worksheet
Work the ten problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 5 student to find their own decimals error teaches more than seeing it circled. Ask the student to re-work one missed decimals problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Decimals are aligned to the right: 3.5 + 0.42 = 3.92. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "A board is 49.54 meters long. Quinn cuts off 44.59 meters.…" — for this one.
The right-alignment habit from whole numbers is being applied to a notation where the point, not the right edge, fixes the value.
Write in the placeholder zero (3.50) before adding; aligning the points then aligns everything else.
