What this worksheet covers
There are 24 fractions problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "1/4 = ___/12" and "___ × 3/5 = 1 4/5". It is written against Common Core 5.NF.1 — Number & Operations—Fractions, grade 5.
Skills practised
The grade 5 fractions sequence covers adding and subtracting unlike denominators, multiplying fractions, and dividing with unit fractions; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise missing addends, missing factors, and missing terms in equivalent fractions. To finish it, a student has to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Fifteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "1/4 = ___/12" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A missing numerator or a missing factor asks the student to think about the fraction relationship in reverse.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "3/6 + ___ = 2/3", Set B's is "4/6 + ___ = 5/6".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 5 a student should take all 24 fractions problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more fractions practice piles on. Print Set B of this fractions missing number before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
One mistake to watch for
Equivalent fractions are made by adding the same number to top and bottom: 2/3 becomes 3/4. On this grade 5 missing number, problem 17 ("___ × 3/5 = 1 4/5") is the kind of item where it shows.
Multiplying and adding are being confused in the renaming step.
Draw the fraction, cut every piece in half, and count; the pieces double, they do not gain one.
