What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 5 drill sheet holds 22 fractions problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and the numbers run as high as 12. Two problems from the middle of the page — "6 × 1/4" and "3/7 × 7/9" — show the range. The sheet sits inside Common Core 5.NF.4, in the grade 5 Number & Operations—Fractions strand.
Skills practised
The grade 5 fractions sequence covers adding and subtracting unlike denominators, multiplying fractions, and dividing with unit fractions; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise multiplying Fractions Practice. To finish it, a student has to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms. Eleven different answers appear across the 22 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
This drill runs 22 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 8, "6 × 1/4" shows the level it holds. A page of one fraction operation lets the renaming step become routine before anything else is layered on.
Set A, Set B and Set C
Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 12 is "2/3 × 2/3", Set B's is "2/3 × 2/3".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 5 a student should take all 22 fractions problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more fractions practice piles on. If more than a third of the 22 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in fractions rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Answers are left unsimplified or as improper fractions when the sheet asks for lowest terms. Problem 15 on this grade 5 drill page, "3/7 × 7/9", is where to look for it.
Simplifying is seen as an optional extra step rather than part of the answer.
Add a checking step: is there a number that divides both parts? Is the top bigger than the bottom?
