What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 3 drill sheet holds 22 division problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. The numbers run as high as 100. Two problems from the middle of the page — "56 ÷ 8" and "90 ÷ 10" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 3.OA.2 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 3.

Skills practised

The grade 3 division sequence covers division facts with divisors to 10 and 12, and division as an unknown-factor problem; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is interpreting Division as Equal Sharing. To finish it, a student has to recall the division facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Eight different answers appear across the 22 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 22 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 8, "56 ÷ 8" shows the level it holds. A run of same-shaped quotients is where the steps of the algorithm stop needing to be thought about.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 12 is "54 ÷ 6", Set B's is "12 ÷ 2".

How to use this worksheet

By grade 3 a student should take all 22 division problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more division practice piles on. If more than a third of the 22 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in division rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Division facts are found by guessing and checking with multiplication, slowly. On this grade 3 drill, problem 15 ("90 ÷ 10") is the kind of item where it shows.

The division fact is not stored; only the multiplication fact is.

Practise each times-table row as division facts too, and pair every missing-factor problem with its division form.
