What a student is asked to do here is four-digit addition with the standard algorithm. Working the page asks a student to carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit.
About the drill format
This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "6283 + 6609" shows the level it holds. A straight run of sums is where regrouping becomes routine rather than an event.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "4816 + 6862", Set B's is "8458 + 9063".
How to use this worksheet
Work the 30 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own addition error teaches more than seeing it circled. Print Set B of this addition drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
One mistake to watch for
The carried digit lands in the wrong column, or is dropped on the last step. Problem 21 on this grade 4 drill page, "1971 + 5716", is where to look for it.
The carry is being tracked in working memory instead of on paper.
Require the small carried digit to be written every time, and use graph paper so the digits cannot drift sideways.
