What this worksheet covers
There are ten story problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "The bakery sold 93 muffins on Friday and 172 muffins on…" and "A theater sold 166 tickets online and 113 tickets at the…".
Skills practised
Grade 3 addition means three-digit column addition with regrouping in more than one place. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "The bakery sold 93 muffins on Friday and 172 muffins on…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Deciding that a situation calls for addition is a different skill from adding, and it needs its own practice.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A bus starts with 85 riders and picks up 40 more at the…", Set B's is "Quinn had 32 cookies and found 129 more under the bed. How…".
How to use this worksheet
Work the ten problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own addition error teaches more than seeing it circled. Ask the student to re-work one missed addition problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Speed collapses under a timer even though accuracy is fine. On this grade 3 word problems, problem 7 ("A theater sold 166 tickets online and 113 tickets at the…") is the kind of item where it shows.
Facts are being reconstructed by counting rather than recalled.
Time a short run of the same facts daily for a week; the goal is a falling time on the same page, not a bigger page.
