What this worksheet covers

This is a 16-problem vertical format for grade 4 addition, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: fifteen of the sixteen column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 9,826. Problems 6 and 11, for instance, are "3067 + 7353" and "6669 + 6073". The sheet sits inside Common Core 4.NBT.4, in the grade 4 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

About the vertical format format

Vertical format stacks the two operands over a rule with space above for regrouped digits; the 16 problems, problem 6, "3067 + 7353" among them, sit four to a row. Stacked operands make the place-value columns visible, which is what regrouping actually depends on.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 9 is "9302 + 8799", Set B's is "1241 + 5538".

How to use this worksheet

Give this vertical format uninterrupted. At grade 4, addition is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and sixteen problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. If more than a third of the sixteen problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in addition rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Speed collapses under a timer even though accuracy is fine. Watch problem 11 of this vertical format — "6669 + 6073" — for this one.

Time a short run of the same facts daily for a week; the goal is a falling time on the same page, not a bigger page.
