What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 3 vertical format sheet holds twenty addition problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, all twenty column problems need regrouping and the numbers run as high as 870. Two problems from the middle of the page — "685 + 822" and "627 + 745" — show the range. The sheet sits inside Common Core 3.NBT.2, in the grade 3 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.
Skills practised
At grade 3, addition is about three-digit column addition with regrouping in more than one place, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skill on the page: grade 3 Three-Digit Addition with Regrouping. To finish it, a student has to carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit.
About the vertical format format
The 20 problems here — problem 7, "685 + 822", for one — are printed in column form, the layout the standard algorithm is written for. Stacked operands make the place-value columns visible, which is what regrouping actually depends on.
Set A, Set B and Set C
Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 11 is "848 + 199", Set B's is "341 + 100".
How to use this worksheet
Give this vertical format uninterrupted. At grade 3, addition is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and twenty problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Mark the twenty problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.
One mistake to watch for
Speed collapses under a timer even though accuracy is fine. Problem 14 on this grade 3 vertical format page, "627 + 745", is where to look for it.
Facts are being reconstructed by counting rather than recalled.
Time a short run of the same facts daily for a week; the goal is a falling time on the same page, not a bigger page.
