What this worksheet covers

About the vertical format format

The 20 problems here — problem 7, "685 + 822", for one — are printed in column form, the layout the standard algorithm is written for. Stacked operands make the place-value columns visible, which is what regrouping actually depends on.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original sheet, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 11 is "848 + 199", Set B's is "341 + 100".

How to use this worksheet

Give this vertical format uninterrupted. At grade 3, addition is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and twenty problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Mark the twenty problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

The carried digit lands in the wrong column, or is dropped on the last step. Problem 11 on this grade 3 vertical format page, "848 + 199", is where to look for it.

The carry is being tracked in working memory instead of on paper.

Require the small carried digit to be written every time, and use graph paper so the digits cannot drift sideways.
