What this worksheet covers
There are twenty story problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. The problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "Emma begins piano practice at 5:15 PM and plays for 30…" and "A library story time begins at 2:30 PM and lasts 40…". It is written against Common Core 3.MD.1 — Measurement & Data, grade 3.

What a student is asked to do here is telling Time & Adding Time Intervals. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing. The 20 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 7, "Emma begins piano practice at 5:15 PM and plays for 30…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Practice schedules, lunch money and movie times are the situations time and money were taught for.

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. How to use this worksheet
Work the twenty problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own time and money error teaches more than seeing it circled. Ask the student to re-work one missed time and money problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Elapsed time is added as if minutes went to 100. Problem 14 on this grade 3 word problems page, "A library story time begins at 2:30 PM and lasts 40…", is where to look for it.
Decimal place value is being applied to a base-60 system.
Count to the next hour first, then add what remains.
