What this worksheet covers

There are 72 mixed operations problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Eight of the 36 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 90. Problems 25 and 49, for instance, are "20 ÷ 2" and "12 ÷ 3". The sheet sits inside Common Core 3.OA.7, in the grade 3 Operations & Algebraic Thinking strand.

Skills practised

At grade 3, mixed operations is about all four operations, with two-step expressions introduced, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is mixed multiplication and division facts and mixed addition and subtraction facts. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit. 29 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "20 ÷ 2" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Mixed facts under time pressure are the truest fluency check there is: nothing can be done by pattern.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "9 × 9", Set B's is "49 ÷ 7".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 72 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own mixed operations error teaches more than seeing it circled. Print Set B of this mixed operations timed drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
