What this worksheet covers

There are 72 subtraction problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: 32 of the 72 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 97. Problems 25 and 49, for instance, are "8 - 2" and "14 - 7". It is written against Common Core 2.OA.2 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 2.

Skills practised

The grade 3 subtraction sequence covers three-digit subtraction with regrouping, including across zeros; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is subtraction facts within 20 and two-digit subtraction mentally. Working the page asks a student to carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit. 29 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "8 - 2" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Subtraction facts are the slowest of the four to become automatic; a timer shows which ones are still being counted.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "12 - 7", Set B's is "14 - 3".

How to use this worksheet

Give this timed drill uninterrupted. At grade 3, subtraction is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 72 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 72 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
