What this worksheet covers
This is a 30-problem drill for grade 3 time and money, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and fifteen of the problems are drawn clock faces to read. Problems 12 and 22, for instance, are "How many minutes from 2:55 to 4:00?" and "How many minutes from 5:55 to 6:05?". Common Core 3.MD.1 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
At grade 3, time and money is about reading a clock to the minute, elapsed time in minutes, making change, and adding money, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise reading a clock to the minute and elapsed time in minutes. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing and read both hands of an analog clock. 29 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
A drill is straight practice: 30 problems of the same kind, laid out one to a line with working space under each — problem 12, "How many minutes from 2:55 to 4:00?" is typical of the whole page. Clock faces and coin sets in a steady run are how the two readings — hands and values — become automatic.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "How many minutes from 6:15 to 7:15?", Set B's is "How many minutes from 5:30 to 6:00?".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 3 a student should take all 30 time and money problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more time and money practice piles on. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 30 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
One mistake to watch for
Minutes are read from the numeral the minute hand points to: 3:20 is read as 3:04. On this grade 3 drill, problem 22 ("How many minutes from 5:55 to 6:05?") is the kind of item where it shows.
The face has one set of numerals doing two jobs, and the student has only learned one.
Count by fives around the face aloud while pointing at each numeral, then match the minute hand to that count.
