What this worksheet covers

24 fractions problems fill this missing number page; problem 9 asks "2/4 + ___/4 = 1", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Further down, problem 17 asks "1/2 of ___ = 8". The skill maps to Common Core 2.G.3.

Skills practised

At grade 2, fractions is about naming halves, thirds and fourths of a shape, and half or a quarter of a set, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: half and a quarter of a set, how many equal parts, and parts that make a whole. Working the page asks a student to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Twelve different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "2/4 + ___/4 = 1" is one of them. A missing numerator or a missing factor asks the student to think about the fraction relationship in reverse.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "1/2 of ___ = 6", Set B's is "1/2 of ___ = 3".

How to use this worksheet

Grade 2 attention runs short, so split these 24 fractions problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Print Set B of this fractions missing number before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

A fraction of a set is answered with the number of pieces: 1/4 of 12 is "4". Problem 17 on this grade 2 missing number page, "1/2 of ___ = 8", is where to look for it.

The denominator is being reported instead of used.

Share the 12 objects into 4 equal groups physically and count one group.
