What this worksheet covers
This is a 24-problem missing number for grade 6 ratios and proportions, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "7:6 = 21:___" and "2:8 = 10:___". It is written against Common Core 6.RP.3 — Ratios & Proportional Relationships, grade 6.
Skills practised
At grade 6, ratios and proportions is about writing and simplifying ratios, equivalent ratios, ratio tables, unit rates and ratios as percents, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is equivalent ratios and unit rates. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can keep the decimal points aligned, carry money notation through to the answer, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 21 different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "7:6 = 21:___" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A missing term in a ratio or proportion is the format's natural home; the whole topic is finding the missing term.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "6:1 = ___:8", Set B's is "6:1 = ___:4".
How to use this worksheet
Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an ratios and proportions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 24 answers. Ask the student to re-work one missed ratios and proportions problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Equivalent ratios are made by adding the same number to both terms. Watch problem 17 of this missing number — "2:8 = 10:___" — for this one.
Scaling and adding are being confused, as with fractions.
Build a ratio table by multiplying across a row and check that the columns keep the same relationship.
