What this worksheet covers

30 ratios and proportions problems fill this drill page; problem 11 asks "9:9 = ___:18", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 72. Further down, problem 21 asks "6:4 = 12:___". Common Core 6.RP.3 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

The grade 6 ratios and proportions sequence covers writing and simplifying ratios, equivalent ratios, ratio tables, unit rates and ratios as percents; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is equivalent ratios and simplifying ratios. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 27 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "9:9 = ___:18" shows the level it holds. A run of proportions or unit rates lets the setup become mechanical so attention can move to the reasoning.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "Simplify the ratio 63:56.", Set B's is "Simplify the ratio 21:27.".

How to use this worksheet

Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 30 ratios and proportions problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 6 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Date the drill before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the ratios and proportions stuck.

One mistake to watch for

A ratio is written in the wrong order: boys to girls given as girls to boys. Watch problem 21 of this drill — "6:4 = 12:___" — for this one.

The order of the words in the question is not being mapped to the order of the numbers.

Write the labels first — boys : girls — and fill the numbers under them.
