What this worksheet covers
This is a 24-problem missing number for grade 2 measurement, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 12,000. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ pt = 16 cups" and "___ gal = 32 qt". Common Core 2.MD.3 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 2 measurement means adding and subtracting lengths, feet and inches, meters and centimeters, and time to the half hour. The skills on the page: feet and inches, meters and centimeters and missing lengths. Working the page asks a student to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Nineteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ pt = 16 cups" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A missing side, dimension or unit count reverses the formula, which is the only way to check it is understood.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "10 hr = ___ min", Set B's is "___ m = 400 cm".
How to use this worksheet
Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this missing number in half, do one part of the 24 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Date the missing number before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the measurement stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Lengths are compared by the size of the number, ignoring the unit. Problem 17 on this grade 2 missing number page, "___ gal = 32 qt", is where to look for it.
The unit has not yet been seen as part of the quantity.
Have the student say the full measurement aloud with its unit before comparing.
