What this worksheet covers

There are 60 measurement problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 30. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "13 cm ___ 15 cm" and "5 cm + 2 cm". It is written against Common Core 1.MD.1 — Measurement & Data, grade 1.

Skills practised

At grade 1, measurement is about measuring length in non-standard units, comparing lengths, and adding lengths within 20, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is comparing lengths, adding and subtracting lengths within 20, and longer or shorter. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 33 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "13 cm ___ 15 cm" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Unit conversions are facts — 12 inches, 100 centimeters, 60 minutes — and a timer shows which are known.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "A crayon is 10 in long and a straw is 8 in long. How much…", Set B's is "A pencil is 21 in long and a block is 19 in long. How much…".

How to use this worksheet

Sit alongside for this measurement timed drill. At grade 1 the useful information is not the score but which of the 60 problems drew a pause. Keep the key face down until all 60 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
