What this worksheet covers
This is a 60-problem timed drill for grade 1 mixed operations, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, thirteen of the 60 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 19. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "17 - 6" and "5 + 12". Common Core 1.OA.6 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
The grade 1 mixed operations sequence covers addition and subtraction within 20 on the same page, and fact families; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is mixed addition and subtraction within 20 and mixed facts within 10. To finish it, a student has to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Nineteen different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "17 - 6" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Mixed facts under time pressure are the truest fluency check there is: nothing can be done by pattern.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "6 - 4", Set B's is "18 - 9".
How to use this worksheet
Grade 1 attention runs short, so split these 60 mixed operations problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Print Set B of this mixed operations timed drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
