What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 1 mixed review sheet holds 24 measurement problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Two problems from the middle of the page — "A pencil measures 10 paper clips long. Each paper clip is 1…" and "10 ft - 2 ft" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 1.MD.2 — Measurement & Data, grade 1.
Skills practised
The grade 1 measurement sequence covers measuring length in non-standard units, comparing lengths, and adding lengths within 20; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is measuring length in non-standard units, comparing lengths, and adding and subtracting lengths within 20. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing. Nineteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the mixed review format
The 24 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 9, "A pencil measures 10 paper clips long. Each paper clip is 1…" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Perimeter, area, conversions and time on one page keep the student choosing the right formula for each problem.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "A ribbon is 9 in long and a straw is 30 in long. How much…", Set B's is "A pencil is 16 cm long and a rope is 30 cm long. How much…".
How to use this worksheet
Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 1. Fold this mixed review in half, do one part of the 24 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Date the mixed review before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the measurement stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Lengths are compared by the size of the number, ignoring the unit. On this grade 1 mixed review, problem 17 ("10 ft - 2 ft") is the kind of item where it shows.
The unit has not yet been seen as part of the quantity.
Have the student say the full measurement aloud with its unit before comparing.
