Grade 1 Equal Groups: Repeated Addition to 20

Equal groups as repeated addition for grade 1, the first step toward multiplication, with every total 20 or less. Sixteen problems and an answer key.

CCSSAligned to Common Core 1.OA.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10 using strategies such as making ten and decomposing.

What this worksheet covers

Sixteen mixed operations problems fill this mixed review page; problem 6 asks "5 groups of 2: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: the quantities stay small, which keeps the idea in the foreground rather than the size of the numbers. Further down, problem 11 asks "3 groups of 4: 4 + 4 + 4". It is written against Common Core 1.OA.6 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 1.

Skills practised

Grade 1 mixed operations means addition and subtraction within 20 on the same page, and fact families. Specifically, the problems practise grade 1 Equal Groups: Repeated Addition to 20. To finish it, a student has to recall the mixed operations facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Eight different answers appear across the sixteen problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

The 16 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 6, "5 groups of 2: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. This format is the operation's natural home: every problem shape the grade knows, in no fixed order.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 9 is "6 groups of 2: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2", Set B's is "5 groups of 2: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2".

How to use this worksheet

Sit alongside for this mixed operations mixed review. At grade 1 the useful information is not the score but which of the sixteen problems drew a pause. Print Set B of this mixed operations mixed review before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

Fact families are memorised as four unrelated facts. On this grade 1 mixed review, problem 11 ("3 groups of 4: 4 + 4 + 4") is the kind of item where it shows.

The part-part-whole relationship behind them has not been made visible.

Draw one bar model and write all four equations from it, so the family is one picture with four sentences.
