What this worksheet covers
30 percents problems fill this mixed review page; problem 11 asks "A $49.00 item is 15% off. What is the sale price?", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Further down, problem 21 asks "A value changes from 25 to 6.25. What is the percent…". Common Core 7.RP.3 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 7 percents means tax, tip and discount, percent increase and decrease, and harder percents of a number. What a student is asked to do here is tax, tip and discount, percent of a number, and percent increase and decrease. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and carry money notation through to the answer. 24 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the mixed review format
The 30 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 11, "A $49.00 item is 15% off. What is the sale price?" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Conversions, percent-of and reverse problems on one page keep the student reading the question, not the pattern.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "2% of 392", Set B's is "A $62.00 item is 10% off. What is the sale price?".
How to use this worksheet
Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 30 percents problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 7 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Keep the key face down until all 30 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
The percent is used as a plain number: 20% of 50 is answered 1,000 or 70. Problem 21 on this grade 7 mixed review page, "A value changes from 25 to 6.25. What is the percent…", is where to look for it.
The percent sign is being read as decoration and the "per hundred" is lost.
Rewrite every percent as a fraction over 100 or a decimal before computing, for as long as it takes to become automatic.
