What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 7 mixed review sheet holds twenty decimals problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: sixteen of the twenty problems involve a negative quantity and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Two problems from the middle of the page — "18 ÷ 2" and "1 3/8 ÷ 1/2" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 7.NS.2 — The Number System, grade 7.

Skills practised

Grade 7 decimals means adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing signed decimals, and repeating decimals. The skill on the page: grade 7 Dividing Rational Numbers. To finish it, a student has to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, keep the decimal points aligned, and track direction as well as magnitude. Eighteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

The 20 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 7, "18 ÷ 2" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Adding, comparing and multiplying on the same page keeps the student choosing where the point goes rather than assuming.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 11 is "-2 1/4 ÷ 11/12", Set B's is "-9 1/4 ÷ 11/12".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 7 an decimals answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the twenty answers. If more than a third of the twenty problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in decimals rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Dividing by a decimal is attempted directly and the point in the quotient is lost. On this grade 7 mixed review, problem 14 ("1 3/8 ÷ 1/2") is the kind of item where it shows.

The step of scaling both numbers to make the divisor whole has been skipped.

Multiply divisor and dividend by the same power of ten first, and write the new problem out before dividing.
