Grade 7 Expressions & Equations Mixed Review

Grade 7 expressions and equations mixed review sheet: 30 problems on two-step equations, the distributive property, combining like terms with signed coefficients, evaluating expressions with negative values, one-step inequalities.

CCSSAligned to Common Core 7.EE.4: Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r to solve problems.

What this worksheet covers

There are 30 expressions and equations problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, 23 of the 30 problems involve a negative quantity and the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "Solve: 1x + (-20) = -21" and "Solve: 2x + 16 = 0". The sheet sits inside Common Core 7.EE.4, in the grade 7 Expressions & Equations strand.

Skills practised

Grade 7 expressions and equations means two-step equations, the distributive property, like terms with signed coefficients and one-step inequalities. The skills on the page: two-step equations, the distributive property, and combining like terms with signed coefficients. To finish it, a student has to track direction as well as magnitude and apply the order of operations to powers.

About the mixed review format

Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover five different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "Solve: 1x + (-20) = -21" sits next to problems of a different kind. Evaluating, simplifying and solving on one page keep the student reading the instruction rather than assuming one.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "Solve: -2x + 16 = 8", Set B's is "Expand: -3(-9x - 9)".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 7 an expressions and equations answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Mark the 30 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

Like terms are combined with unlike ones: 3x + 2 becomes 5x. Watch problem 21 of this mixed review — "Solve: 2x + 16 = 0" — for this one.

The variable is being treated as a label that can be dropped.

Underline x-terms and circle constants before combining, and only combine within a mark.
