What this worksheet covers

There are twenty multiplication problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 10. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "3 × 2" and "8 × 5". It is written against Common Core 3.OA.7 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 3.

Skills practised

At grade 3, multiplication is about multiplication facts to 10 × 10 and 12 × 12, and multiplying by multiples of ten, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skill on the page: grade 3 Multiplication Practice. Working the page asks a student to recall the multiplication facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Eighteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 20 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 7, "3 × 2" is typical of the whole page. Thirty untimed products let a student practise the algorithm while accuracy, not speed, is the target.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 11 is "4 × 9", Set B's is "9 × 4".

How to use this worksheet

Work the twenty problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own multiplication error teaches more than seeing it circled. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the twenty problems needs a score attached to be useful.

One mistake to watch for

Zeros are lost when multiplying by multiples of ten: 6 × 40 becomes 24. On this grade 3 drill, problem 14 ("8 × 5") is the kind of item where it shows.

The fact 6 × 4 is recalled and the ten is forgotten.

Rewrite 6 × 40 as 6 × 4 × 10 for a few days so the ten is a visible factor rather than a decoration.
