What this worksheet covers

This is a 72-problem timed drill for grade 5 decimals, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits and the numbers run as high as 99.63. Problems 25 and 49, for instance, are "13.1 × 11" and "1.0 × 4". Common Core 5.NBT.7 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

The grade 5 decimals sequence covers adding and subtracting decimals to hundredths, and multiplying and dividing by whole numbers; this page sits inside it. The skills on the page: multiplying a decimal by a whole number, rounding decimals, and comparing decimals. Working the page asks a student to keep the decimal points aligned and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 54 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "13.1 × 11" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Quick decimal comparisons and small sums are the fluency that keeps multi-step decimal work from stalling.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "4.5 × 7", Set B's is "5.4 × 10".

How to use this worksheet

Give this timed drill uninterrupted. At grade 5, decimals is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 72 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Ask the student to re-work one missed decimals problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
