What this worksheet covers

72 fractions problems fill this timed drill page; problem 25 asks "3/5 × 1/12", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and the numbers run as high as 16. Further down, problem 49 asks "1/2 × 5/6". Common Core 5.NF.4 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

At grade 5, fractions is about adding and subtracting unlike denominators, multiplying fractions, and dividing with unit fractions, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is multiplying fractions, dividing with unit fractions, and simplifying fractions. Working the page asks a student to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms. 35 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

With 72 short problems such as problem 25, "3/5 × 1/12" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Equivalent fractions and simple sums recalled quickly are what free a student's attention for the harder operations later.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 37 is "3/4 × 5/8", Set B's is "2/3 × 2/6".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 72 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 5 student to find their own fractions error teaches more than seeing it circled. Ask the student to re-work one missed fractions problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
