What this worksheet covers

There are eight story problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. The problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Problems 3 and 6, for instance, are "Uma's pencil is 4 paper clips long. A crayon is 8 paper…" and "Leo lines up a 4-inch book and a 4-inch card end to end.…".

Skills practised

At grade 1, measurement is about measuring length in non-standard units, comparing lengths, and adding lengths within 20, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing. Six different answers appear across the eight problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the word problems format

The 8 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 3, "Uma's pencil is 4 paper clips long. A crayon is 8 paper…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Gardens, ribbons, tanks and trips are the reason measurement is taught; the numbers finally mean something.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 5 is "Willa lines up a 6-inch book and a 4-inch card end to end.…", Set B's is "Elena's pencil is 9 paper clips long. A crayon is 3 paper…".

How to use this worksheet

Grade 1 attention runs short, so split these eight measurement problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the eight problems needs a score attached to be useful.

One mistake to watch for

Lengths are compared by the size of the number, ignoring the unit. Watch problem 6 of this word problems — "Leo lines up a 4-inch book and a 4-inch card end to end.…" — for this one.

The unit has not yet been seen as part of the quantity.

Have the student say the full measurement aloud with its unit before comparing.
