What this worksheet covers
This is a 24-problem drill for grade 1 measurement, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "A toy car measures 9 paper clips long. Each paper clip is 1…" and "A toy car measures 10 paper clips long. Each paper clip is…". Common Core 1.MD.2 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 1 measurement means measuring length in non-standard units, comparing lengths, and adding lengths within 20. Specifically, the problems practise measuring length in non-standard units and comparing lengths. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing. Nineteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
A drill is straight practice: 24 problems of the same kind, laid out one to a line with working space under each — problem 9, "A toy car measures 9 paper clips long. Each paper clip is 1…" is typical of the whole page. A page of one conversion or one formula is where the factor or the formula becomes automatic.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "A ribbon measures 11 paper clips long. Each paper clip is 1…", Set B's is "A pencil measures 11 paper clips long. Each paper clip is 1…".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this measurement drill. At grade 1 the useful information is not the score but which of the 24 problems drew a pause. Print Set B of this measurement drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
One mistake to watch for
Lengths are compared by the size of the number, ignoring the unit. Watch problem 17 of this drill — "A toy car measures 10 paper clips long. Each paper clip is…" — for this one.
The unit has not yet been seen as part of the quantity.
Have the student say the full measurement aloud with its unit before comparing.
