What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 1 missing number sheet holds 24 measurement problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 20. Two problems from the middle of the page — "7 cm + ___ cm = 14 cm" and "3 cm + ___ cm = 7 cm" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 1.MD.2 — Measurement & Data, grade 1.

Skills practised

Grade 1 measurement means measuring length in non-standard units, comparing lengths, and adding lengths within 20. What a student is asked to do here is adding and subtracting lengths within 20 and longer or shorter. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Fourteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "7 cm + ___ cm = 14 cm" is one of them. A missing side, dimension or unit count reverses the formula, which is the only way to check it is understood.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "7 cm + ___ cm = 15 cm", Set B's is "3 in + ___ in = 7 in".

How to use this worksheet

Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 1. Fold this missing number in half, do one part of the 24 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Ask the student to re-work one missed measurement problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.

One mistake to watch for

Lengths are compared by the size of the number, ignoring the unit. On this grade 1 missing number, problem 17 ("3 cm + ___ cm = 7 cm") is the kind of item where it shows.

The unit has not yet been seen as part of the quantity.

Have the student say the full measurement aloud with its unit before comparing.
