What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 6 missing number sheet holds 24 expressions and equations problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, twelve of the 24 problems involve a negative quantity and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Two problems from the middle of the page — "Solve: x - 10 = -5" and "Solve: x ÷ 2 = 5" — show the range. Common Core 6.EE.7 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 6 expressions and equations means evaluating expressions, whole-number exponents, one-step equations and combining like terms. The skills on the page: one-step equations and missing coefficients. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can track direction as well as magnitude and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Twenty different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "Solve: x - 10 = -5" is one of them. A missing coefficient or constant asks the student to reason about the structure of the expression, which is the algebraic habit itself.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "Solve: x + 15 = 20", Set B's is "Solve: x - 1 = 16".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 24 problems. At grade 6, expressions and equations rewards care over speed — a rushed missing number gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Mark the 24 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

Like terms are combined with unlike ones: 3x + 2 becomes 5x. Problem 17 on this grade 6 missing number page, "Solve: x ÷ 2 = 5", is where to look for it.

The variable is being treated as a label that can be dropped.

Underline x-terms and circle constants before combining, and only combine within a mark.
