Grade 7 expressions and equations means two-step equations, the distributive property, like terms with signed coefficients and one-step inequalities. Specifically, the problems practise two-step equations and the distributive property. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can track direction as well as magnitude. 25 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "Solve: 7x + (-20) = 50" shows the level it holds. Solving the same shape of equation thirty times is how the inverse-operation steps stop being deliberate.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "Expand: -4(-9x - 2)", Set B's is "Expand: -4(-9x - 1)".
How to use this worksheet
Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 7 an expressions and equations answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Keep the key face down until all 30 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
In a two-step equation the coefficient is divided off before the constant is subtracted. Watch problem 21 of this drill — "Solve: 4x + 14 = -6" — for this one.
The order of undoing is being taken from the order of doing.
Undo in reverse: whatever was done last to x is undone first.
