What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 6 mixed review sheet holds 30 expressions and equations problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, seven of the 30 problems involve a negative quantity and the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer. Two problems from the middle of the page — "Simplify: -2x + (-1) + (-8)x + 1" and "Solve: x ÷ 4 = 8" — show the range. Common Core 6.EE.2 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 6 expressions and equations means evaluating expressions, whole-number exponents, one-step equations and combining like terms. Specifically, the problems practise evaluating expressions, whole-number exponents, and one-step equations. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing, track direction as well as magnitude, and apply the order of operations to powers.

About the mixed review format

The 30 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 11, "Simplify: -2x + (-1) + (-8)x + 1" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Evaluating, simplifying and solving on one page keep the student reading the instruction rather than assuming one.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "6^3", Set B's is "Solve: x - 11 = 8".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an expressions and equations answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Keep the key face down until all 30 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

Like terms are combined with unlike ones: 3x + 2 becomes 5x. On this grade 6 mixed review, problem 21 ("Solve: x ÷ 4 = 8") is the kind of item where it shows.

The variable is being treated as a label that can be dropped.

Underline x-terms and circle constants before combining, and only combine within a mark.
