What this worksheet covers

This is a 22-problem drill for grade 6 expressions and equations, printed in black and white with the key on page two. One of the 22 problems involve a negative quantity and the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer. Problems 8 and 15, for instance, are "7²" and "3³ + 2⁴". Common Core 6.EE.1 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

At grade 6, expressions and equations is about evaluating expressions, whole-number exponents, one-step equations and combining like terms, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can track direction as well as magnitude and apply the order of operations to powers. Nineteen different answers appear across the 22 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 22 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 8, "7²" is typical of the whole page. Solving the same shape of equation thirty times is how the inverse-operation steps stop being deliberate.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 12 is "2³ + 4²", Set B's is "4³ + 6²".

How to use this worksheet

Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 22 expressions and equations problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 6 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Date the drill before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the expressions and equations stuck.

One mistake to watch for

An exponent is multiplied by the base: 4³ becomes 12. Watch problem 15 of this drill — "3³ + 2⁴" — for this one.

The superscript is being read as a multiplier.

Write out the repeated product for every power for a few days.
