What this worksheet covers

There are twenty division problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 63. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "45 ÷ 9" and "40 ÷ 8". The sheet sits inside Common Core 3.OA.7, in the grade 3 Operations & Algebraic Thinking strand.

Skills practised

At grade 3, division is about division facts with divisors to 10 and 12, and division as an unknown-factor problem, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise division facts with divisors to 10. To finish it, a student has to recall the division facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Nine different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the vertical format format

Vertical format stacks the two operands over a rule with space above for regrouped digits; the 20 problems, problem 7, "45 ÷ 9" among them, sit four to a row. The long-division bracket is the layout the algorithm was written for; the quotient goes where it belongs.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 11 is "24 ÷ 4", Set B's is "40 ÷ 10".

How to use this worksheet

Give this vertical format uninterrupted. At grade 3, division is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and twenty problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Print Set B of this division vertical format before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

Division facts are found by guessing and checking with multiplication, slowly. On this grade 3 vertical format, problem 14 ("40 ÷ 8") is the kind of item where it shows.

The division fact is not stored; only the multiplication fact is.

Practise each times-table row as division facts too, and pair every missing-factor problem with its division form.
